Tea Tree Oil: Using tea tree oil on canker sores December 04 2013

Canker sores are painful, open sores in the mouth (mouth ulcers), and are extremely
common. They are often be triggered by viruses, stress, diet, hormones, and food allergies,
although a definite cause is not entirely known. Anyone can get a canker sore, and they
often erupt without warning and can be very disruptive to the ability to eat, drink, and even
talk. Canker sores usually go away on their own, but this can take up to 2-3 weeks and can
be extremely painful and annoying.
Tea Tree Oil, when distilled for therapeutic use, comes from the botanical species melaleuca
alternifolia, and is commonly used to treat both the pain and duration of canker sores. Tea
tree oil is a natural disinfectant and has both antibacterial and antiviral properties that can
greatly reduce the severity of a canker sore and aid in the recovery process.
How to treat a canker sore with tea tree oil:Tea Tree Oil
For the strongest method of application, apply one drop to a Q-tip and apply directly to the
sore. If you find this to be too intense, add a small amount of water to slightly dilute the oil.
Mix 3-5 drops of tea tree oil with approximately 2 ounces of water. Swish around in your
mouth for 30 seconds up to 5 times a day to relieve symptoms and speed healing. Be careful
not to swallow this mouthwash solution
If you suffer from frequent canker sores, a mouthwash solution can also be used once a day
to help prevent a canker sore eruption.
To further help prevent canker sores; use the following homemade toothpaste once a day:
2 T aluminum free baking soda
2 T coconut oil
10-20 drops of tea tree essential oil
5-10 drops of peppermint or lemon essential oil
