Lavender Oil: Using lavender oil for mastitis June 18 2014

Days Island 100% Pure Lavender Oil

Mastitis is an infection of the breast that is most commonly found in breastfeeding women. Although it can occur at any time, it is most commonly experienced within the first month of breastfeeding and causes painful inflammation of the breast tissue that is most likely caused by bacteria. The breast will swell, which creates pressure on the milk ducts and has the potential to create blockages and can disrupt the milk supply.  Mastitis should be treated immediately to avoid any further complications for both mom and baby.

Lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia) has amazing antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that make it extremely beneficial for use on a mastitis infection. It can help to ease pain and quicken the healing time of a mastitis infection, and has long been used to induce relaxation, which can be extremely helpful in times of bodily infection. The anti-inflammatory properties of lavender oil can also help to ease the symptoms of a related fever and assist in drawing it (as well as the infection) out of the body.

How to use lavender oil to treat mastitis:

Place 1-2 drops of lavender oil directly on the breast. Repeat several times throughout the day.

Place 3-5 drops of lavender oil into 1 cup of warm water. Soak a piece of Muslin or 100% Cotton into this mixture and apply, as a compress, over the breast. Repeat twice daily, for up to 5 days

Mix 3-5 drops of lavender oil with 1 tablespoon of quality carrier oil. In the evening, massage a small amount onto the breast and the bottoms of the feet (cover with socks).

Add 1-3 drops of lavender oil to about ½ cup of cool water. Saturate a washcloth with this mixture and place on forehead.
