Tea Tree Oil: Using tea tree oil for allergies July 23 2014
Allergies are extremely common and come with a variety of symptoms that range in severity depending on the season. They are the result of an over-sensitive immune system, and occur when the body attacks allergens (pollen, dander, mold, dust, mites, etc.) in a way that is similar to its method of fighting viruses or foreign bacteria. When the body is exposed to the allergen, it produces histamines, which cause cells in the nose, throat, and eyes to swell, which results in a whole range of uncomfortable allergy symptoms including: itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, swollen bronchial passages, asthma, and many more.
Tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia) has both antibacterial and antiviral properties, making it a great natural choice in the treatment of common allergy symptoms, particularly in clearing nasal and bronchial passages, as tea tree oil is an expectorant. This makes for a great potential natural alternative to over the counter antihistamine medications.
How to use tea tree oil to treat allergies:
Add 10-20 drops to a room vaporizer and diffuse in an environment (or during allergy season) when allergies commonly present themselves.
Put 3-5 drops on the bottoms of feet, chest and throat every morning, particularly during high allergy season.
For bedtime relief, make a pillow spray containing 20-30 drops of tea tree oil and 8-10 ounces of water. Use liberally on pillows and sheets to benefit from tea tree oil’s expectorant properties while you sleep.
For another quick fix and to especially relieve bronchial symptoms, rub 1-2 drops on palms, cup around nose and mouth, and inhale deeply.
