Tea Tree Oil: Using tea tree oil for gum disease August 15 2014

Days Island 100% Pure Tea Tree Oil

Gum disease is a very common problem and if left untreated, can lead to a host of additional health problems, including chronic bad breath, tooth decay, tooth loss, heart disease, diabetes, and more. Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant and has both antibacterial and antiviral properties that can greatly help to reduce infections within the mouth. It is frequently used in toothpaste and mouthwash, although in recent years, these products have become laden with chemicals that can decrease the effectiveness of the natural oil. In its natural form, tea tree oil can be highly effective in treating inflamed and infected gums.

How to treat and prevent gum disease with tea tree oil:

For the strongest method of application, apply one drop to a Q-tip and apply directly to the gums. If you find this to be too intense, add a small amount of water to slightly dilute the oil.

Mix 3-5 drops of tea tree oil with approximately 2 ounces of water. Swish around in your mouth for 30 seconds up to 5 times a day to relieve symptoms and speed healing.  Be careful not to swallow this mouthwash solution.

Add 2 drops to your toothpaste before brushing. Use every time you brush your teeth to fight and prevent bacteria buildup.

Place 2 drops on the tongue periodically throughout the day for added maintenance.

Add 1-2 drops to each cup of water you drink throughout the day to maintain mouth health.  Be sure to mix the oil with a proper emulsifier - either a carrier oil or a small amount of alcohol - before ingesting.

To further help prevent gum infection; use the following homemade toothpaste once a day:

2 T aluminum free baking soda

2 T coconut oil

10-20 drops of tea tree essential oil

5-10 drops of peppermint or lemon essential oil
